Your Guide To The Perfect Turn In the Road

When taking your driving test you will be required to complete one of a range of manoeuvres if you are to pass your test. The manoeuvres are ones that are designed to be a part of everyday driving and to show case your ability to control the car safely and with the correct technique in a variety of positions.

Once you have mastered the basics of driving the car on your driving lessons. Your driving instructor will then start to teach you through each of these manoeuvres. They consist of a turn in the road, a reverse around a corner, a parallel park, a reverse bay park and an emergency stop. As you progress through your driving lessons these will make up the bulk of your education.

To help master these manoeuvres, I have put together a series of guides of how to perfect each one of these manoeuvres and how to ensure you have the correct technique leading up to your test.

The first is in this series is a guide on the turn in the road.

The turn in the road is the simplest of manoeuvres you will undertake and is usually the first one your driving instructor will teach you. As with most elements of your driving education, practice makes perfect. However if you follow the steps in this simple guide you should be able to master this deceptively simple manoeuvre:

Check your surroundings: Before you even think about turning the car around. Ensure that you have checked what is in front, behind and to the side of you. The road itself needs to be a decent width and there needs to be a decent area of space on the side of the road with no vehicles parked to allow you to turn around in. you also need to be far enough from the end of the road so that any cars turning into your road will be able to spot you and stop if you are mid-manoeuvre.

Signal your intent: If there is a car behind you, signal to the left and slow right down slowly to a stop. If the road is wide enough, pull over to the left so that he can move around you.

Make half the turn: Once you are confident the coast is clear and you have room to make the turn, have one last check all around you (including the blind spot) and slowly pull off turning the car to the right hand side of the road. Once the car has gone as far as you think it will go without touching the curb you should stop and put the handbrake on and put the car in neutral.

Check your surroundings (Again): with the car in neutral and the handbrake on, you should take the time to look to your left and right to ensure there is nothing too close and (if the road is wide enough) will try and squeeze by. Once you are confident in this you can...

Complete the turn: Put the car into reverse, take the handbrake off and slowly take your foot of the clutch and turn the wheel hard to the left to turn the car back around. Edge back until the car is face slightly the other way or you think you will touch the curb. With particularly narrow road you may need to go back forward and adjust a few times until you get the right position (you will not fail if you don't get it first time). You must ensure that each time you check your surroundings before moving (including the blind spot).

Check and Move Off: Once you are in position. Have a quick check over your shoulder and if nothing is coming, steer to the right and dive off until you are back on the left hand side of the road.

Viola! You have completed a turn in the road. Seems simple no? However, you must remember to constantly check your position and mirrors before making any moves whilst turning the car around.
