We can learn a lot from the scout's motto of "Be Prepared." Being prepared can help us get out of life's toughest situations. In school, you knew that if you studied in advance, you would have no problem when test day rolled around. Now we know that in order to avoid traffic and get to work on time, we have to leave early. Sometimes preparation doesn't have to be that extensive. On the other hand, when it comes to things like winter driving, it's a good idea to take the time to make sure you have some essentials in your car at all times. These essentials make up your winter car care emergency kit.

If you feel like you don't have the time to make a winter car emergency kit, you can hop online and buy one. Basic kits will cost you about $18 or so, and a more extensive kit could cost you about $200. But you can make your own emergency kit with items that you already have around the house.

You should include these items in your winter emergency kit:
Bag of abrasive material (sand, salt, cat litter) or traction matsSnow shovelSnow brushFlashlight with extra batteriesWindow washer solventIce scraperCloth or roll of paper towelsJumper cablesGloves, hats and blanketsWarning devices (flares or triangles)Drinking waterNon-perishable snacks (energy or granola bars)Extra clothesFirst-aid kitBasic toolkit (screwdrivers, pliers, adjustable wrench)Mobile phone and car charger with important numbers programmed in it, including a roadside assistance provider

A winter car care emergency kit won't help if you haven't taken the time to prepare your vehicle for the elements. Before winter hits, have your mechanic inspect and winterize your vehicle. If you don't have a regular mechanic, many shops will offer specials for a reasonable price. Or even better, if you know someone who is good with cars, they might be able to check things out for you. Bottom line, be prepared and you won't have to worry should something go wrong.
